Scan anything, anywhere, for less
3D Scanning Systems Overview
1. What is the StarCam™?
The StarCam™ is a portable 3D digitizing and measurement system, manufactured and sold by VX Technologies, Inc., consisting of stereoscopic camera and proprietary software to process and generate 3D models of a subject.
2. Is the StarCam™ a laser system? How does it work?
The StarCam™ system does not use lasers. Instead, it uses stereoscopic sensors and projected dots for measuring and locating points on an object's surface — then processing this data to create a digital 3D model of the surface.
3. What software comes with the StarCam™ system?
Two software packages are available for use with the StarCam™, which are: the VX 3D Studio Surface Suite™, designed for reverse engineering applications — and the VX 3D Studio Profile Suite™, designed for 3D crystal engraving applications.
4. How fast can a StarCam™ system capture surface data?
After the object is set up, the StarCam™ system can take a single scan in less than a second. Then another 2-3 seconds is required for processing that scan to produce a 3D image. (The time it takes for this procedure depends on such factors as how high a resolution the scan is to be, the complexity of the surface features being measured, and the power of the computer system being used.)
5. How large a surface area can the StarCam™ capture in a single shot?
Depending on the model, the StarCam™ can capture in a single shot a surface area equivalent to that camera model's field of view: as much as 0.5m x 0.75m, at a distance of one meter from the object. Larger surface areas can be captured by multiple, sectional scans, which are then aligned and stitched together. (Increasing the distance between the object and the camera will increase the field of view, but also reduce the amount of detail that could be measured.)
6. Can the StarCam™ automatically align multiple images of a subject?
Using the Multi-Image Integration (MII) Packs available in the VX 3D Studio Surface Suite™, multiple images of a subject can be aligned (and stitched) automatically and simultaneously in a single process.
7. Does the StarCam™ software generate 3D surface data for use in CAD/CAM software?
The data that the StarCam™ system captures and produces can be outputted in multiple formats, such as IGES, to generate 3D surfaces in compatible CAD/CAM software packages. Other file output formats include VRML, DXF, STL, and OBJ.
8. Can the StarCam™ be used outdoors?
The StarCam™ can be used in both studio and outdoor environments. In both cases, an important factor is that the lighting conditions (ambient light and projector light) combine to provide proper contrast and brightness on the subject being scanned. Most lighting conditions do not pose a problem.
9. What is the StarCam™'s accuracy?
The StarCam™ can measure points with an accuracy of 0.1mm (0.004 inches), and can capture features on a surface that are as small as 1mm (0.039 inches).
10. What types of customers are using the StarCam™ system?
Many of the StarCam™'s users operate in the reverse engineering field, such as auto-parts manufacturing and sculptural replication, and in the 3D crystal engraving markets. Other users include those in biometric industries such as cranial, torso, or foot measurement, and in government agencies for tasks like identifying and sorting hazardous materials.
